60 years of history, hospitality, and love for Formentera

Six decades ago, when Formentera was an isolated and entirely rural paradise with 3,000 inhabitants and ferry connections arriving only sporadically, a family decided to pursue a simple yet deeply human dream: offering hospitality on an island awakening to tourism.
What began as a modest kiosk serving soft drinks and homemade dishes to the first summer visitors eventually transformed into what we know today as Hotel Rosales Formentera — an accommodation with soul, both witness and contributor to the island’s growth from the late 1960s to the present day.
The origins: from a beach kiosk to a hotel with soul, essence, and history
The story of Hotel Rosales Formentera is that of a family dream born when Formentera was just beginning to emerge as an international tourist destination.
In the 1960s, before the island became famous worldwide, a local family decided to open a modest kiosk just 150 meters from Es Pujols beach. Its purpose was to offer the island’s earliest tourists a place by the sea to enjoy a taste of Mediterranean cuisine—simple traditional dishes made with local products brought directly from the family’s shop in Sant Ferran.
A small counter at the front and a tiny kitchen at the back were enough to offer visitors a little piece of the Formentera of bygone days. These were the humble beginnings of Hotel Rosales.
Over time, the kiosk evolved into a beloved local restaurant for both visitors and residents—a gathering place that started attracting travelers searching for the island’s authentic essence.
This first business eventually expanded with the construction of guest rooms for visitors staying longer. Thus, Hostal Rosales opened its doors on May 31, 1966, maintaining ever since its warm, attentive, and family‑oriented character—an authentic atmosphere where hospitality is not just a service, but a philosophy. Rosales is more than a hotel: it is passion for hosting, driven by people whose dedication makes guests feel welcome, comfortable, and eager to return.
Formentera then and now: historical tourism context
Back then, Formentera was very different: infrastructure was limited, electricity and water supply were not always reliable, and roads were nearly nonexistent. Access depended on slow and infrequent boats, and much of the island’s economy was agricultural.
This historical, social, and economic context—marked by early stages of change and opportunity for both travelers and locals—led to the creation of a tourism business aimed at transforming the island’s agricultural isolation into a paradise that anyone could visit and experience at least once in their lifetime.
The story of Rosales intertwines with the evolution of Balearic tourism, which from the 1960s onward began attracting European travelers seeking sun, sea, and tranquility.
Transformation through the decades
Over six decades, the hotel has undergone multiple renovations and updates to meet guests’ needs while preserving its welcoming essence.
In 1994, when the second generation of the family took over, a major renovation introduced rooms with private bathrooms—pioneering at the time and key to the hotel’s modernization.
Since then, improvements have continued steadily: from equipping all rooms with telephones and basic services in the 1990s to ensuring high‑quality Wi‑Fi connectivity in the 21st century. Hotel Rosales Formentera has always stood out for its commitment to continuous modernization and adaptation to the technological and historical context of each era—never losing the closeness and authenticity that define it.
Values that define us: hospitality, warmth, and sustainability
What has distinguished Hotel Rosales throughout these 60 years is not only its physical evolution but also its service philosophy:
