Travelling to Formentera in September is especially appealing for couples, families, friends and travellers who prefer to combine beaches, food and leisurely walks without rushing through each day.
This is not about finding a completely empty island. September is still a lively month for tourism. For many visitors, however, it offers a different rhythm from the height of summer: more room for spontaneity, pleasant temperatures and plenty of opportunities to discover both the coast and the island’s interior.
September usually retains distinctly summery conditions, although it is sensible to pack a light layer for the evening and check the forecast before travelling.

This combination makes it easy to plan full days: the beach in the morning, an unhurried lunch, a route in the late afternoon and an evening stroll through Es Pujols.
It is also advisable to remain flexible. As autumn approaches, there may be windy, cloudy or rainy days, so it is best not to plan a break based entirely on sunbathing.
The sea remains one of the main attractions of Formentera in September. You can alternate well-known sandy beaches with short coastal walks and decide where to go each day according to the wind and sea conditions.
Es Pujols beach is an urban sandy beach around 690 metres long, beside the seafront promenade. It combines stretches of sand with small rocky areas, traditional boat sheds and a wide range of services in the town.
Its location lets you reach the sea without turning every swim into an excursion. You can begin the day with a walk along the shore, return to the hotel for lunch and then set off to explore other parts of the island.
Continue along the coast and, after a ten-minute walk, you will reach Sa Roqueta, an appealing alternative for those who would like to extend their walk and find a slightly more secluded setting.
During a stay of several nights, you can set aside time to discover other landscapes, including Migjorn, Cala Saona, Ses Platgetes, Llevant and Ses Illetes.
As the heat becomes less intense, cycling or walking along rural paths becomes even more appealing.
Formentera has 32 green routes and more than 100 kilometres of itineraries, many of them suitable for bicycles. The official suggestions include routes linking La Savina, Sant Francesc and Es Pujols, as well as paths leading to other villages and coastal areas.
There is no need to turn the day into a sporting challenge. A gentle route in the late afternoon reveals dry-stone walls, fields, junipers and small tracks that show a side of the island beyond its beaches.
Take water, sun protection and suitable footwear. Even in September, the sun remains strong and some sections offer little shade.
One advantage of staying in Es Pujols is being able to end the day without arranging any further transport.
After returning from the beach or a route, you can stroll through the town, sit on a terrace and walk down to the seafront promenade. The Es Pujols market is usually held every day from May to September, from 7 pm to midnight, with stalls selling crafts, clothing, accessories and souvenirs.
This plan works particularly well for a couple’s break: a sunset stroll, dinner near the sea and a walk back to your accommodation.
A bicycle is a suitable option for short journeys and easy routes. Depending on your itinerary, you can also use public transport, take a taxi or hire a vehicle on the island.
Anyone wishing to bring their own vehicle should bear in mind that the Formentera.eco regulation remains in force throughout September. In 2026, it applies from 1 June to 30 September, both dates included, and vehicles covered by the regulation require the corresponding permit.
It is important to obtain it only through the official portal and to check the current conditions before travelling.
